Academic Assessment Committee Updates

  • A subcommittee of the Academic Assessment Committee has developed By-Laws for governing the AAC. The By-Laws will be placed on the agenda in Fall 2005 for approval.
  • In Spring 2005, an additional six faculty were trained as readers to score general education artifacts.
  • Readers have been scoring general education artifacts since the Spring 2003 semester and have recommended that the rubrics and standards for cultural diversity, writing, and mathematics be reviewed and revised.
  • Changes in scoring sessions have been implemented. A scoring session is now scheduled as soon as the semester is complete. Two readers score one set of artifacts; they share the documents and record the scores on a scoring sheet. If there is a noticeable variance in the two scores, then a third reader scores the artifact to ensure scoring consistency. Meeting together to score the artifacts and sharing the documents has significantly reduced pre-scoring preparation time and saves on copying expenses.
  • The AAC approved using an Intent to Submit Artifacts and Submission Form. The form will be completed by faculty early in the semester and sent to the Assessment Coordinator. The Assessment Coordinator will use the form as an alert system to remind faculty their artifacts are expected at the end of the semester. The form also provides space for instructors to identify the components of a rubric to look for when scoring the artifacts.
