NATIONAL PARK COMMUNITY COLLEGE the garland county single parent scholarship fund The Garland County Single Parent Scholarship Fund Advisory Council (GCSPSF) recently announced upcoming fund raisers benefiting single parents living in Garland County pursuing college decrees. A “Film Night,” made possible by the generosity of the NPCC Student Film Group led by Richard Browne, NPCC faculty, will be held at the Malco Theatre on Saturday, May 10, at 7:00 p.m. Admission will be $5. The student filmmakers will be present and the films to be shown are: Bundling and Break Away directed by Courtney Hood, Prey directed by Sam Goza, The Camera directed by Ben Dugan, Urban Disappearances directed by Gene Cary and Wesley Cazales, and Until Further Notice directed by Yadira Lara. A Spa Event sponsored by Shelly Blackwell’s Signature Spa will be held on May 16. Appointments are available for duo and trio 50-minute massages or facials, including complimentary refreshments, at Shelly Blackwell’s Signature Spa in Historic Downtown Hot Springs across from Bath House Row. Appointments may be booked at 501.627.0505 and each individual service will be available for $75. A percentage of the proceeds goes to the GCSPSF. AnnWilson, vice chair of the GCSPSF Advisory Council, said, “These services will make wonderful Mother’s Day presents. Gift cards are available that can be redeemed at a different date. It is hoped that women will plan this event as part of a fun day with a friend or two and feel they are contributing to a good cause at the same time. What could be better than that!” She added, “If May 16 is not a good date, when booking an appointment for another day, please be sure to ask for the GCSPSF Special.” Money raised for this scholarship fund is matched by funds from a private endowment up to $5,000 each year. The GCSPSF, for the past two years, has received all available matching funds through grants, contributions, and fund raisers. These scholarships, usually given in the amount of $500 each, can be used for anything the family might need after tuition, fees, and books are paid. Oftentimes, students receive other scholarships that must be used for tuition or books. The GCSPSF scholarship may assist with groceries, rent, gasoline, child care, etc., which may make a difference in whether a parent can make ends meet and stay in school. Ms. Wilson said, “The significant thing about the efforts put forth to raise money for the Single Parent Scholarships is that it is all about helping single parents get and stay in school. This impacts the entire family as jobs and income can be enhanced while parents provide an example to their children about the importance of an education.” The requirements for applying for a scholarship from the GCSPSF are:
