The courses available in this A.A.S. program are for those interested in the use, application, or maintenance of computers and information. Extensive computer use, interaction, maintenance, and networking are significant features. This degree includes courses in networking, hardware maintenance, and applications programming. General education courses included in this degree prepare the student to communicate with customers and management. Completion of the recommended courses leads to the Associate of Applied Science Degree in Computer Information Systems.Some courses in this program may not transfer to all senior institutions. Students who plan to transfer to a senior institution are strongly advised to correspond with the institution to which they plan to transfer. In the Business Division curricula, courses prerequisite to another class require a minimum grade of C in order to advance to the next course. Computer Information Systems - Cisco (Technical Certificate) Graduates who complete this 30-hour credit technical certificate acquire the knowledge, skills, and technical ability appropriate for employment requiring entry-level duties and responsibility in the computer networking environment. Competencies incorporate basic skills needed to help support a TCP/IP based network using Ethernet LAN media, specifically, hosts, switches, and routers. Computer Information Systems - Computer Support (Technical Certificate) This program is designed to provide basic knowledge and skills needed to work with computers in: help desk support, network cabling, fiber optics, PC repair and maintenance, application software, and operating systems. After completion of this 30-credit-hour certificate, the graduate will have the necessary skills required for entry-level employment in the Computer Information Systems field. Employment opportunities may include: assistant network administrator/technician, computer maintenance technician, data-entry clerk, certified cabling specialist, certified fiber optic specialist, and help desk support representative. To insure success in the Computer Information Systems program, the following program prerequisites are required before entering the program:
Computer Information Systems - Microsoft (Technical Certificate) This certificate offers entry-level courses for individuals who wish to acquire experience with networking and operating system principles and equipment requirements. Topics include: network basics, protocols, operating system configurations, connectivity issues and internetworking devices. The essentials of network management, interoperability techniques, and troubleshooting approaches are emphasized. Computer Information Systems - Programming Support Graduates who complete this 27-hour credit technical certificate acquire the knowledge and skills appropriate for entry-level employment in the computer programming field. In addition to learning the foundations of two distinct programming languages, students will have good technical skills in the most prevalent end-user applications plus the basic knowledge needed to maintain personal computer hardware. General education courses included in this certificate prepare the student to think logically and ethically and to communicate well with customers and management.
