NPCC Project SERVE The American Association of Community Colleges has awarded grants to eight community colleges for a three year project to encourage students to participate in service learning projects. National Park Community College was selected along with Brevard Community College (Florida), Edmonds Community College (Washington), ElComino College (California), Henderson Community College (Kentucky), Miami Dade College (Florida), Minneapolis Community and Technical College (Minnesota), and Prairie State Community College (Illinois). Project SERVE – Students Encounter Real Vocational Experience is the program in which National Park Community College has partnered with Jessieville Elementary School to develop opportunities for students to participate in service learning and career development. Additional community partners will be added to the program in year two and three. The Project SERVE staff includes Mary Kay Wurm, Director, Audrey Smelser, Associate Director, and Eddie Picking, Community Partner. “Service Learning combines classroom instruction with community service, focusing on critical, reflective thinking as well as personal and civic responsibility. It is a wonderful opportunity for us to make a difference in our college and community, and especially our students,” said Mary Kay Wurm, Director of Project SERVE. The selected colleges will be part of a national survey to evaluate the role community colleges play in providing education and training to students with disabilities. |
