Non-Registered Computer Setup

**Note** If you have anything currently set for home or business use you may want to take note of them.

  1. Making your connection:

The first step is to connect your mobile device to the wireless system. Sometimes devices connect automatically, if yours doesn’t, try the following:

  • Windows Vista – Click on Start Button, Click on Connect To, then Double Click on NPCC
  • Windows XP – On the bottom right of your screen, double click on the wireless connection, then double click on NPCC
  • Windows 2000 – Use the software that came with your wireless card and/or set the configuration in Adapter properties.
    • You will need to make sure of the following settings: IP configuration is DHCP, Channel is Auto, Mode is Infrastructure, SSID is NPCC, transmit rate is Auto, and encryption is disabled.
  • MacBook – Click on the Wireless icon in the upper right corner of the screen and make sure Airport is turned on (If it isn’t, click Turn AirPort On). On that same drop down menu, if you see NPCC in the list – select it, if not then select other. After you choose other type NPCC under network name and set security to none.

**Note** If you are using a third party software to connect then the 2000 method is recommended. The software will usually disable Windows default connection options as shown for Vista and XP.

  1. Setting Your Proxy:

Now that you have established a connection it’s time to set your Proxy IP address in the browser you wish to use. Start by opening a web browser (Internet Explorer, FireFox, Safari, Netscape, etc.) and receiving a security alert, click Continue (If running Pre IE 7 then click Ok and Yes for certificate). You will be taken to the NPCC’s wireless login page. Before you can sign in you need to make these changes first:

  • Internet Explorer – Click on Tools Menu, click Internet Options, click Connections tab, then click LAN Settings button. Of the four check boxes make sure the bottom two check boxes are checked (the top one doesn’t matter, the second one needs to be unchecked) and type in the Address field “10.0.4.12” and Port field “8080” (both without the quotes). Click both Ok buttons.
  • Mozilla FireFox & Netscape – Click on Tools Menu, click Options, click General Tab, click Connection Settings Button, choose manual Proxy and type in the Proxy field “10.0.4.12” and Port field “8080” (without the quotes) and check use proxy for all protocols. Click Ok then Ok.
  • Safari – Click on System Preferences, click on Network, on the show drop down, select AirPort, click on proxies, check the three boxes (FTP, HTTP, HTTPS) and set all three servers to 10.0.4.12 8080.

**Note** Your page will probably have expired by now, just follow what the page reads and click on the “here” link.

  1. Logging In:

Now all you need to do is log in with your Student or Faculty/Staff network account. This is the same account and password you use in the labs on campus. If you have difficulty with the account try to refresh the login page or if you do not have an account then you will need to contact the front desk in the Computer Resource building.

  1. Connecting Through VPN:

**Note** It is IMPERATIVE that this step is taken immediately for security reasons.

  • Vista/XP – Once you login you will receive a pop-up asking you to choose a connection, select “NPCC Wireless Connection” and click Connect. Then type your username and password and click connect again. The progress box will close once you have connected and you will now have a secure connection.
  • MacBook – Open your Macintosh HD, Open Applications, Open Interconnect. For server address type 42.0.0.1 then enter your network name/password then click connect. You will have the option to save these settings so you will only need to type your password from then on.

Your connection should be good to go.
