Pre-College Level Classes (PCLC)

PCLC 33 - Reading Improvement II

Beginning in Fall 08, students who enroll at NPCC with an ACT Reading score of 15-18 or COMPASS scores of 65-80 will take Reading Improvement II. In addition this course is required for all students who do not earn an 11.0 in comprehension in Reading Improvement I (PCLC 0023). Like Reading Improvement I, this is a highly individualized course structured around the needs of each student. Offered in a laboratory setting. Students must have a score of 11.0 in comprehension to exit the course. Pre-requisite: An ACT of 15 or better or a COMPASS score of 65 within the three years preceding enrollment. PCLC 43 - Essential Grammar

A fundamental writing skills course including spelling, vocabulary development, punctuation, capitalization, sentence structure, eliminating sentence fragments, run-on sentences, subject/verb agreement, pronoun/antecedent agreement, and basic paragraph development. Emphasis is directed to writing clear, effective sentences in coherent, unified paragraphs. Prerequisite: Placement test.

PCLC 53 - Essential Essays

This course is a study of writing strategies for essays. Students will learn sentence combining through coordination, subordination, and parallel structure. Basic essay format and various methods of essay development are studied in preparation for Composition I. Students must earn an 11.0 in Language on the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) to successfully complete the class. Pre-requisite: Appropriate ACT or COMPASS scores. Fall, Spring, Summer.
